Chief inspector retires
PA Wellington The deputy police district commander of Wanganui, Chief Inspector Bernard Rowe, has retired after asking to be declared medically unfit, the “Dominion” newspaper reported yesterday. Mr Rowe, aged 44, was convicted in the District Court at Wanganui on May 18 last year of assaulting a Wanganui man who was sitting handcuffed in the back of a police car. He has been suspended from police duties since February 10, 1984, and retired at the end of last month. Mr Rowe retired after applying at the end of February to be declared medically unfit, said the acting director Uf personnel, Chief Inspector Owen Jacobson. Such a request was common, Mr Jacobson said. “It is the means by which most medical boardings (retirements) occur,” he said. Mr Rowe would receive a police pension and a sum from the Police Welfare and Benevolent Fund.
