Auckland looks set to win golf title

PA Whangarei Auckland, 12 times a winner in inter-provincial women’s golf, looks set to make it 13 today when it plays Otago in the final round of the Stylemaster tournament at the Mt Denby course. Otago, given an exceptional all-round performance, could upset the favourite. But Auckland has to win only two of the five games to clinch the championship.

Yesterday Otago’s international, Jan Scandrett, was trounced six and five by the former New Zealand representative, Liz Douglas, formerly of Southland, and now a Cantabrian, and then had to battle hard for a one-up win over Jocelyn Queenan (Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay). But Debbie Smith, Scandrett’s fellow New Zealand representative and the current national matchplay champion, continued her unbeaten run. Playing for bottom-placed Nelson-West Coast-Marl-borough, Smith has fashioned a record of four wins and a draw from her five matches.
