Sex education proposal
PA Wellington The New Zealand School Committees’ Federation said yesterday that it wanted' the Government’s proposals on sex education to be included in its new school health syllabus. Parliament’s Labour and Education Select Committee is hearing submissions on the Education Amendment Bill, which includes a
revised health syllabus with an understanding of pubertal change recommended for pupils in Forms 1 and 2. The federation supported the amendment bill and told the committee that the teachers of the sex education component should be drawn from within the pool of classroom teachers in schools. It also recommended that the teachers be given appropriate training and that school committees
be given a say in selecting the teachers.
The federation’s submission said it did not accept that a component in the health education syllabus on pubertal change did not constitute sex instruction. Rather it recognised the reality that young children already discussed sex, and it tried to ensure that these discussions took place in the context of sensitivity, maturity, and responsibility.
