Belfast shares lead in rugby competition

Belfast now shares the lead with Shirley at the top of the senior rugby points table after beating Suburbs 28-9 when the night rounds were completed at Denton Oval last evening. A vigorous suburbs side contested the match well for three-quarters of the time, but Belfast piled on 16 points in the last 12 minutes including three fine tries, the last scored by Mardy Vincent after a move which went the length of the field. The margin could have been greater had it not been, for some woeful goal kicking. Brent Hutchinson missed all of his eight attempts before leaving the field at half-time with a hamstring injury, and his replacement, Kevin Burnie, missed three before finally

finding the posts.

Whenever the Belfast backs had room to move they stretched the Suburbs defence and the full-back, Kieran Keane, and Wayne Smith, playing at centre for a change, were especially penetrative.

In the late game Linwood beat Burnside 12-10 in a hard fought but entertaining match. Burnside was prominent with driving forward play, and the inventiveness of the backs, but their handling let them down on one or two vital occasions.

Early in the second-half Burnside enjoyed a 10-6 lead, but the speedy Linwood centre, Kose Seinafo, clinched the game after 20 minutes with a 70m runaway try.

For Linwood the first five-eighths, Steve Bachop, used the kick over the top to good effect, and the second five-eighths, Andrew McCormick showed tremendous speed. Ross Curd made some robust runs. Results were: Belfast 28 (M. Burns 3, B. Hutchinson, T. Gomans, M. Vincent tries; K. Burnie 2 conversions), Suburbs 9 (P. Tait try; J. Neilson, conversion and penalty). Referee: Mr H. R. Catherwood.

Linwood 12 (K. Seinafo try; A. McCormick penalty and a conversion; S. Bachop dropped goal), Burnside 10 (R. Penney try; D. McKinnel 2 penalties). Referee: Mr G. T. Barrett.

Press Cup points: Belfast, 10, 7, 17; Suburbs, 9,5, 14; Linwood, 11, 6, 17; Burnside, 11, 6, 17.
