18 nations enter yachting

NZPA-AAP Sydney Eighteen nations have challenged for the Admiral’s Cup international offshore yacht racing series in England in July and August.

The series will bring together 60 of the latest designs in ocean racing yachts for the most prestigious offshore series in the world.

It will be the largest fleet since Australia last won the Admiral’s Cup in 1979, the year of the Fastnet Race tragedy in which 23 yachts foundered and 15 crew members drowned. The Ocean Racing Club of Australia yesterday received by telex the list of challenges from the Royal Ocean Racing Club in London.

They were: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, West Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Defending the Cup will be West Germany which defeated 14 other nations in 1983.

New Zealand has also selected its team, two Bruce Farr One Tonners, Exador and Epic Lass and the Laurie Davidson-designed Canterbury Export.
