Strong golf side named

PA Wellington The New Zealand Golf Association selectors have named a strong team for the Asia-Pacific amateur championships at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club on September 4 to 7.

Michael Barltrop and Terry Cochrane (both Auckland), who finished fourth in the Eisenhower Trophy event in Hong Kong last November, are retained, with Brent Paterson (Canterbury) and Colin Taylor (Waikato) making up the four-man team.

After their performances in Hong Kong, Barltrop and Cochrane were automatic choices.

Paterson, who first burst into prominence when

runner-up in the Australian amateur championships in 1983, gets another chance to show he can produce his top form at international level while Taylor has re-estab-lished himself as New Zealand’s top player on current form.

Owen Kendall (Bay of Plenty) is probably the unlucky player. Arguably the most naturally gifted amateur in the country, Kendall has probably missed out because of his inconsistency. The team was announced following a council meeting in Wellington yesterday at which the three national selectors, Messrs Goldie Wardell, Tim Treacy and Barry Forrest, were retained for another year.
