Friday shop hours at risk from marches
PA Auckland Shopkeepers in Auckland’s Queen Street will consider ending Fridaynight trading because of disruption from protest marches through the main street.
The Central Businessmen’s Association will hold a public meeting on May 23 to consider all-day shopping on Saturdays instead. “We don’t mind them once in a while but virtually every week is too much to bear,” said the association’s chairman, Mr Max Johnson. “They are not helping business, which in some cases is down quite dramatically during late-shopping nights.” Mr Johnson said many shopkeepers employed extra security staff in fear that a march might develop into violent confrontation.
“These protesters are not interested in shopping but they block the streets so that the real shoppers cannot park their cars,” he said.
The Saturday shopping proposal would mean that shops could close at 6 p.m. on Fridays and trade between 9.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. on Saturdays. “It is a world-wide trend which we would like to encourage in Auckland anyway,” said Mr Johnson.
