Prisoners stage rolling strike
PA Auckland Inmates of D block in Paremoremo Prison have vowed that every week two of them will join a hunger strike in protest against conditions.
Two inmates on Saturday refused food because of allegedly long lock-up hours and poor psychiatric facilities.
They will be joined on Friday by two more inmates.
For more than a week D block inmates have refused to come out of cells for cleaning duties and recreation after breakfast.
The prison’s deputy superintendent, Mr Max Matheson, confirmed this week that two inmates had been refusing food since Saturday. He said the prison authorities were talking to the prisoners daily in an effort to resolve the disputes.
