Drums hit car, driver injured

PA Levin A woman was in Wellington Hospital last evening after drums of a highly toxic chemical rolled from a truck on State highway 1 at Otaki yesterday.

One of the drums hit the car driven by Mrs Karyn Smith, aged 24, of Wellington, and extensively damaged the rear of the vehicle. About 20 drums of diethylene glycol, an antifreeze agent, rolled from the truck outside a roadside shop, just south of the Otaki River bridge, about 12.30 p.m. Drums rolled through a fence near the shop and fruit and vegetables were splashed with the chemical. All affected produce had to be dumped. Within 30 minutes apples had gone brown from contact with the chemical.

Drums narrowly missed rolling and bouncing through the shop doors and windows. The Ministry of Works cleaned up the spillage and sand was sprinkled over the area.
