Wales in contention

NZPA-Reuter Wrexham lan Rush, of Liverpool, and Manchester United’s Mark Hughes kept Wales firmly in contention for a place in next year’s World Cup soccer finals when they steered their side to a convincing 3-0 win over Spain yesterday. Rush and Hughes, more accustomed to opposing each other in the English first division, joined forces to tear the Spaniards apart

and sweep the Welsh from third place to top of European qualifying group seven. In a European group two match, West Germany, which has never lost a World Cup qualifying match, moved a step closer to the finals by thrashing Czechoslovakia 5-1 in Prague. Since 1934, West Germany have played 35 World Cup qualifiers, winning 32 and drawing three.
