Mr Hawke’s rating slips in poll
NZPA-AAP Canberra The approval rating for the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, has slipped to 55 per cent from its peak at 75 per cent in March last year, according to the latest Morgan Gallup poll, reported in the “Bulletin” magazine. A poll taken on the first two week-ends of April shows Mr Hawke’s approval rating down three points from the 58 per cent rating in the previous poll on the last two week-ends in March.
The approval rating for the leader of the Liberal Opposition, Mr Andrew Peacock, fell two points to 47 per cent compared with
a recent peak of 56 per cent soon after the last Federal election and a low point of only 19 per cent in October last year.
The Morgan Gallup poll also shows that 60 per cent of electors thought Mr Hawke made the better Prime Minister; 27 per cent said Mr Peacock would be the better leader.
This compares with 61 per cent for Mr Hawke and 27 per cent for Mr Peacock in the previci- coll.
