Ministry for the Environment

Sir,—Creating a Ministry for the Environment will save taxpayers’ money by separating commercial from environmental or social activities. The Treasury’s briefing document, “Economic Management — Land Use Issues” observes that this separation could significantly reduce the Forest Service’s current annual expenditure of about J3OOM. Despite our difficulties in selling agricultural produce, Lands and Survey persists in spending about SBSM annually from marginal land. The department’s favoured image as guardian of our parks and reserves conceals this absurd spending from the public. The related proposal to revamp the Commission for the Environment as an independent body that reports directly to Parliament can save the country many millions. Most “Think Big” and earlier industrial projects could not have withstood critical analysis. These were bom from a shotgun marriage between selfish departments and desperate or unwise politicians. Equipped with appropriate powers of control, the new commission could help to prevent such embarrassing projects.—Yours, etc. P. S. GRANT. Nelson, April 12, 1985.
