Nuclear warship visits

Sir,—The initiative of your Government in restricting nuclear warships has met with a warm response in Western Australia, the first state to elect a Federal senator on a purely nuclear disarmament platform. Perth is constantly visited by nuclear warships, and although we do not oppose Americans, we would much prefer them to come as happy tourists rather than tired, bored naval personnel. The incidence of prostitution, drugs and rape has been shown to rise during the visits of the nuclear-armed armadas. Recently we were visited by David Lange, on his way to Africa. Although he was not on an official visit, and could not therefore speak to either the press or the crowd of well-wishers and supporters who gathered outside his hotel, we found a willing Kiwi security man to present Mr Lange with an apron and tea-towel decorated in peace motifs.—Yours, etc., PETER C. LIMB Nedlands, Western Australia. April 9, 1985
