Opening of chapel will mark college celebrations
The seventy-fifth anniversary celebrations of St Margaret’s College will begin at the school next week, with about 1200 former pupils, parents, and staff members taking part. Registrations for the event have come from Britain, the United States, Hong Kong, and Australia, as well as from throughout New Zealand.
The four-day celebrations will begin on April 25 with the opening of an art and craft exhibition by the Mayoress, Lady Hay, a former
pupil of the school. A welcoming party on Friday evening and a jubilee dinner on Saturday will both be attended by about 900 guests. Highlights of the celebrations will be a visit to the school by the Governor-Gen-eral, Sir David Beattie, and the dedication of the college’s new 500-seat chapel by the Bishop of Christchurch and Warden of St Margaret’s College, the Rt Rev. Maurice Goodall.
The recently completed
chapel and a small theatre have been built to mark the school’s seventy-fifth anniversary. Since launching a fund-raising campaign a year ago, the college has raised about $360,000 of the $450,000 needed to complete both buildings.
Other events planned for the celebrations are an open day at the school, reunion photographs and luncheons, cutting of the jubilee cake, and an anniversary service at Christchurch Cathedral.
