David v. Goliath
Sir,—Mr Lange appears to enjoy his moment of notoriety, posturing on the world stage with that ever-present grin; but he cannot be compared with David against Goliath. David was a well-armed antagonist. He was an experienced and accurate marksman with his slingshot, having had plenty of practice in defence of his father’s sheep. New Zealand’s forces are not sufficient to run a full-time fishery protection service, let alone stand up to other powers, great or small. It may look good to cock a snook at the Americans, knowing full well they will bail us out if we get into trouble, but it is childish and not worthy of our Government.—Yours, etc., H. F. NEWMAN. Rangiora, March 8, 1985.
