Fire linked to power fault

An electrical fault is believed to have started a fire which badly damaged the roof and ceiling of the Linwood High School gymnasium early yesterday morning. Four engines and a snorkel and rescue unit arrived at the school, in Aid wins Road, about 1.30 a.m. to find smoke billowing from the gymnasium’s roof, said a Fire Service spokesman. The fire was under control within about 15 minutes, but fire-fighters remained at the scene until 7 a.m. About half the aluminium roof was burned as well as acoustic tiles inside, said the spokesman. Fire Service officers and Ministry of Works engineers were investigating two possible electrical faults. The school’s principal, Mr W. G. Swan, said yesterday that Ministry engineers would examine the damaged gymnasium again today.

It was too early to estimate the cost of damage to the building, which was insured.
