Rescues mar surf swim

Thirty lifeguards from Auckland surf clubs competed in a 3km surf swim around Paratohi Island off Karekare on Saturday. Fourteen of them had to be rescued. “The race was held in very choppy surf conditions with 3m waves pounding the island,” said its organiser, Mr Bob Harvey. *

A fierce northern rip forced many of the entrants to return to shore within minutes of the start of the face. Fourteen others were rescued. Only seven managed to finish the race. The swim was the highlight of activities marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Karekare Surf Club.
