Cricketer dies

A cricketer in the Canterbury Suburban Association’s competition collapsed and died in a fourth grade match at Hoon Hay Park on Saturday. He was Robert James Stuthridge, a member of the Grosvenor club for the last 17 years.

Mr Stuthridge, the team’s wicket-keeper, had just returned a ball to the bowler in Hoon Hay’s innings when he collapsed. Earlier, he had opened the batting for Grosvenor and top-scored with 21 runs. Two season ago he achieved the unusual feat of stumping 19 batsmen in the course of the competition. His younger brother, Dave Stuthridge, a Canterbury hockey representative, was a member of the same team. The Grosvenor-Hoon Hay match was abandoned, as was the match on the adjacent pitch.
