Minister wrong say retailers
PA Auckland The Fruit Retailers’ Federation says the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Caygill, is wrongly blaming them for fruit price increases. The federation’s president, Mr Jim Lowe, said that Mr Caygill was “duckshoving” the issue and should take responsibility for the increases himself. Mr Caygill had authorised increases in container charges and the federation had been forced to institute
legal proceedings against his department, said Mr Lowe. Imported fruit prices had increased dramatically since devaluation, he said. Californian navel oranges had risen 62.6 per cent from $1.98 a kilogram to $3.22. Ecuador bananas were up 35 per cent from $1.40 a kilogram to $1.97 and American apples were $3.09 a kilogram — a rise of 43.1 per cent from $2.16. Mr Caygill would not comment on the complaints.
