Three yachts for trials?
NZPA-AAP Perth America’s Cup Defence 1987 Limited will enter at least two yachts, and possibly a third, in the trials to select a defender for the America’s Cup series in 1987. The syndicate has formally advised the Royal Perth Yacht Club that at least two yachts will compete for selection honours. The victorious 12-metre yacht, Australia 11, will be joined by Australia 111, which- is expected to be built and launched by the spring of this year. The defence syndicate chairman, Alan Bond, said
that the company might campaign both yachts in the world 12-metre championship next February. Both boats would operate from America’s Cup Defence headquarters in Fremantle and would train together in the lead up to the world series.
Mr Bond said a team of four experienced helmsmen would train for the job of steering the ultimate defender.
They are Hugh Treharne, Colin Beashel, Gordon Lucas and Skip Lissiman. Additionally, John Bertrand and the former Challenge 12 helmsman, John Savage, would act as
trainers, advisers and benchmarks for the new team. Mr Bond said more than 200 potential crewmen had been assessed since the recommissioning of Australia II on November 4 last year. A short list of 40 crewmen will compete for selection in the team for the 1986 world series. • Candidates for the next America’s Cup have been asked to pay a ?U520,000 deposit or pull out of the four-yearly 12-metre yachting series. The decision, taken at a meeting of 17 syndicates from six countries in Ber- ( muda, is aimed at
discouraging frivolous entries, according to Tom Ehman, the executive director of the New York Yacht Club which is entering a challenger. The deposit is in addition to a $12,000 entry fee already paid by the challengers. Ehman said that four of the original 24 syndicates, two Italian, a Swiss and a German, have already dropped out. The syndicates will meet again in Sardinia on June 10 to discuss the pattern of elimination races scheduled for October next year.
