Christian spirit

Sir—John Canham is correct that the moral presuppositions underlying our relationship with our “Christian allies” needs debating. How can we continue to support the mass murder these allies bring to the Pacific? Such a welcome supports the military technologies that our “Christian allies” used to napalm civilians in Vietnam and now use against civilian, populations elsewhere. We have seen many letters from Right-wing Christians opposing the nuclear ship ban. I would like to know how Christianity can be

reconciled with supporting weapons of any sort. Mr Canham’s breed of Christianity has been used to justify many extremes throughout history. During the middle ages the Christian massacres of women and non-believers were supported by the theological creation of devils and witches as the enemy. Today this unseen enemy is “the communist threat.” I suggest that those working for global peace display the true Christian spirit of love thy neighbour.—Yours, etc., ARRON BAKER. February 19, 1985.
