Tongans may be scared, say police
PA Auckland Tongan people thought to be hiding members of a school band might be too scared to come forward, said a police spokesman yesterday. Constable Bob Newson, of the Auckland Central community relations section, said that both the legal aspects of the case and reaction from other Tongans could be preventing people from turning in the musicians.
One of 10 members of the
26-piece band who failed to report at Auckland Airport last week has given himself up and will probably fly home tomorrow. Constable Newson said “low-key” inquiries were continuing for the remaining band members — seven boys and two girls. “A lot of people, including their parents, are concerned for them. Some of the relatives just do not know what to do,” he said.
