C.F.M. raises charges

Canterbury Frozen Meat, Ltd, has announced increased charges for killing, freezing, and processing stock at its three freezing works which handle sheep and lambs. The increases are 5 per cent for lambs and 2.8 per cent for sheep. The total rises in meat and skin charges amount to 55c a head for lambs and 38c a head for sheep. The killing charge, payable directly by the farmer who consigns the stock, is now $7.69 a head plus 6c a kilogram for lambs and $9.36 a head and 6c a kilogram for mutton and ram. These compare with $7.66 and $9.33 plus 6c a kilogram which are the new rates announced on Thursday by Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating, Ltd, for its seven South Island freezing works. C.F.M. kills beef at its Belfast works, and sheep at its Canterbury (Belfast), Fairton, and Pareora works. The general manager, Mr John Drayton, said the new charges reflected increases in labour, packaging and stores costs, these being offset partly by better prices for by-products.
