The wool market generally was steady under strong, wellspread buying competition, said the official report of yesterday’s combined Timaru and Dunedin wool sale in Christchurch. Buyers representing Eastern Europe and Western Europe were the main contributors to a good bidding tone, with support from the Far East. The official report is prepared by the South Canterbury and Otago Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Council of Wool Exporters. Compared with the Christchurch sale on February 1, extra fine Halfbred fleece, 2526 micron, was down as much as 6 per cent; fine Halfbred, 27-28 micron, was in buyers’ favour; medium, 29 micron, was up fully 2.5 per cent; strong and extra strong, 30-32 micron, was in sellers’ favour, and skirtings in buyers’ favour. Also compared with the Christchurch sale on February 1, fine crossbred fleece, 33 micron, generally was unchanged; medium crossbred 3435 micron, was par to minus 2.5 per cent; strong, 36-37 micron, was firm; second-shear, 37 micron, was in sellers’ favour, lambs’ wool was par to minus 2.5 per cent skirtings were unchanged, and locks and second pieces were down 2.5 per cent. The Wool Board bid on 2024 bales, or 9.2 per cent of the offering, and had 801 bales, or 3.6 per cent sold or passed to it. The offering was 14,218 bales of Timaru wool and 8021 bales of Dunedin wool. , Prompt date is Monday, February 25.
