Peat strikes again at Ascot Park

PA Invercargill

Peat, a four-year-old Beaufort Sea mare from the Waimate stable of Wendy Wright, once again showed her preference for the Ascot Park track when she outclassed the field in the Southland 4ZA Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Southland Racing Club meeting yesterday.

A winner on the track in her early three-year-old days, Peat was one of the star performers at the Southland Cup meeting last

month. On the first day she won the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter Stakes and on the second day was runner-up to Royal Lodge in the main sprint. Yesterday she tracked the tearaway pacemakers, Ruby’s Boy and Junior Blue, to the home turn. Peat then accelerated clear and won easing down by five lengths. Decieboy, never far away, fought on for second clear of the weakening Junior Blue. Browband Beau fought on from the back to fill fourth place, a long neck in front of Ocean Guard.
