Aust. shares firmer
NZPA-Reuter Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed slightly firmer after struggling to establish a trend all day. Resource stocks were reasonably well supported despite a lack of firm signals from abroad. At 3.15 p.m.. the all-ordin-aries index was 2.9 points higher at 729.0, the all-industri-als index was up 0.6 points at 1082.3, and the all resources indicator was ahead 4.5 points up at 457.3. National turnover was 26.9. M shares, worth sAust24.2lM. with rises outnumbering falls 133 to 105. On Wall Street's final day of
1984. prices finished higher in moderate trading with the Dow Jones industrial average gaining 7.4 points. But gold drifted down in New York in extremely light trading and held its lower level in Hong Kong.
Brokers said that after the initial uncertainty. local traders chose to ignore the weaker bullion price and the softer Australian dollar, and lifted the markets with fairly strong buying. BHP rose 10c to $5.16. while CSR was 5c stronger at $2.80. Among metals and golds. Consolidated Rutile and Niugini Mining each added 10c to $5.20 and $lO4O. Peko and
MIM added 9c to $4.44 and $2.39. Emperor and Poseidon added 5c each, to $2 35 and $2.70. and CRA 3c to $4.95 Renison. however, dropped 10c to $3.40.
In oil and gas, Ampol Exploration advanced 13c to $2.38. Bridge 10c to $2.50 and Santos 4c to $5.58. while 5c gains took Hartogen to $2.35. Vamgas to $3.25 and Weeks Australia to 8“ cents. In coal groups. Howard Smith gathered in 5c to $3.35. In banking. National Australia and Westpac both eased 1c to $3.47 and $3 44 while ANZ was steady at $5.16. Elsewhere on the industrial boards. News Corp jumped 50c to $11.20 and ACI and AGL both 5c to $1.95 and $2.80. On the other hand. lEL shed 20c to $7.20. Amatil 10c to $4 and Rothmans and ICI each 5c to $3.65 and $2.
