Church help for Ethiopia
The National Council of Churches had pledged its support for the plan of the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, to send a shipload of emergency supplies to droughtstricken areas of Africa. The council’s aid director, the Rev. Brian Turner, said the council would help fill the ship, and its Ethiopian Orthodox Church partner would be glad to assist with the distribution of the goods shipped. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church had set up 17 emergency centres throughout the worst affected areas
and Mr Turner said those centres were in urgent need of back-up supplies of food, medicine, clothing and blankets. The council hopes to have a medical team in Ethiopia to help in the emergency centres by January 22 and Mr Turner hoped the “mercy ship” could carry supplies for them. The medical team so far includes Dr Henare Broughton of Auckland and Sister Joanne Gibbons of Wellington. A Christchurch nurse is expected to be the third team member.
