Woman takes Nelson chair
Wellington reporter A chairwoman has been appointed to the new Nelson Bays Regional Committee, set up after the termination of the regional development council last week. She is Mrs Elspeth Kennedy, a Wellington sharebroker resident in. Nelson. Her appointment was announced on Monday by the Minister of Regional Development, Mr Burke. Mrs Kennedy, the first woman to chair a regional development council or committee, will head a committee of 11 men. Mr Burke said he was confident that Mrs Kennedy would be able to lead the new committee in building closer links with the United Council to create “just the sort of new and vigorous region that the Government wants to see develop.” He said the new committee was not appointed according to partisan party politics. “It represents a good
cross-section of the best commercial and business talent in the region,” he said. The committee is: Mr Angus McNeill, managing director of Seasmoke Products, Ltd; Mr Bill Wilkes, a director of Newmans, Ltd; Mr Kerry Page, a Takaka helicopter operator, Mr Craig Potton, a Nelson City councillor, United Council member and company director; Mr Paul Heywood, a director of the Fruitgrowers Federation, and a Riwaka orchardist and horticulturist; Mr Doug Green, general manager of the Nelson Harbour Board; Mr Rob Maling, chairman of the Nelson Bays United Council and Richmond Borough Mayor, Mr John Palmer, a horticulturist and chairman of the Nelson Kiwifruit Association; Mr Robert Hodgkinson, a Takaka motelier, and Messrs Philip Woollaston and Ken Shirley, members of Parliament.
