Good Guineas trial by Riccarton hopeful
By J. J. BOYLE Secured Money offered evidence of his fitness for today’s Dunedin Guineas with an impressive solo gallop on his home course at Riccarton on Monday. Ridden by his trainer, Barry Taggart, the chestnut sprinted strongly over 1200 m on the outside of the course proper. He got through the last 800 m in 51 and the final 600 in 39.2 — a pleasing effort under a good weight. Secured Money did not measure up when faced with the fresh callenge of a right-handed track and 2000 m in the Avondale Guineas, but his performance in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas in November might have more relevance in thoughts about today’s race. He was the best of the South Island hopefuls when sixth in the Two Thousand Guineas, and among those behind him was the Otaki-
trained Prince Royale, which went on to easily beat Hide the Loot and others over 1400 m on .the third day of the Canterbury; Jockey Club’s meeting. Hide the Loot came right into the boom for today’s race with his close second in the Hazlett Stakes at Wingatui last Saturday, but ,if the form students are geeting the right signals from Cup week form at Riccarton, Secured Money could trouble Peter Jones’s hopeful today.
Secured Money will be ridden by Chris Johnson, who also had Mustard Pot to consider as an alternative mount.
Grant Davison, another top Riccarton rider, has switched from the Wash-dyke-trained Orb to the Southland three-year-old, Rufus Dawes, in the Dunedin Guineas. Rufus Dawes has been twice placed on southern courses since his fairly creditable run for eighth in the Two Thousand Guineas.
