Mail likely to be late
PA Wellington About 4500 bags oi overseas mail, held up by the watersiders’ dispute on Wellington wharves, are un> likely to be delivered until next year, according to Post Office sources. Watersiders will meet today to consider a recommendation from their national federation for a return to work at the container terminal. The secretary of the Wellington Waterfront Workers’ Union, Mr Jim Milne, said last evening that the union’s Wellington management committee would consider the proposition before the stop-work meeting. Watersiders at the country’s four container terminals — Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Port Chalmers — have been on strike for almost two weeks, seeking additional manning levels to handle non-con-tainerised cargo. The proposed return-to-work formula was worked out by the federation’s secretary, Mr Sam Jennings, and representatives of the National Association of Waterfront Employers during late-night negotiation on Friday.
