Birds stolen
PA Auckland Sixteen Australian birds and nine tortoises were stolen from Auckland Zoo at the week-end. The zoo’s director, Mr Derek Wood, said yesterday that the birds could be
headed for lucrative overseas markets. In some countries, he said, they could fetch $lOO,OOO. The thieves climbed the zoo walls, cut through the barbed-wire barrier, and removed the cage lock with bolt-cutters early yesterday. The tortoises were scarce in New Zealand, as only zoos were allowed to import them. “They could well be on a yacht leaving the country,” said Mr Wood.
