Four Avenues rental sought

Rental accommodation for Four Avenues School is sought by the Education Department.

Advertisements will be placed in Christchurch newspapers in the next few days either for a large, empty house or commercial premises of about 400 sq m within the area bounded by Fitzgerald, Moorhouse, Deans, and Bealey avenues. The long-term plan was for Four Avenues School to be housed in a new building, said the department’s southern regional superintendent, Dr Colin Knight, yesterday. In the meantime, the department was looking for rental accommodation for the start of the 1985 year.

The school has been working from privately funded rental accommodation since it was officially closed by the previous Government at the end of last year. It will give up the lease of its rented house at the end of this term. Full Government assistance to Four Avenues was restored in the Budget. About $lOO,OOO a year has been allocated for salaries and running costs and this would pay for any rental accommodation, said Dr Knight Accommodation would definitely be found before the start of the year, but it was a matter of finding something suitable, he said.
