New market to Open
Unemployed craftspeople and hobbyists will have a new outlet from which to sell their wares this weekend with the opening of the Saturday Bargain Market at Canterbury Court. The venture has been organised by Godfrey 103 Services, a charitable trust set up at Diamond Harbour several years ago to provide work experience for unemployed people.
The success of the scheme has resulted in the establishment of the. Saturday Bargain Market, aimed at providing a sales outlet for unemployed hobbyists and to enable them to gain sales experience and expertise in marketing. The market’s organiser, Mr Euan Godfrey, said he was delighted with the response to the venture, which will open at 9 a.m. on
Saturday in the Alston pavilion at Canterbury Court. About 25 stallholders and booked space selling a variety of goods from toys, ceramics, copperware, and glassware to herbs and pot plants, Mr Godfrey said. The market would also incorporates three garage sales and a furniture stall. Although the market was aimed primarily as a retail outlet for goods make by unemployed people, anyone would be able to set up a stall for the pre-booked price of $l2. The trust plans to run the market each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It has booked the pavilion until May; but the market’s future depended on the response from the public, Mr Godfrey said. “We will be running it until people lose interest.” The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. to allow stallholders to set up.
