Blyth beaten
NZPA-PA . London The yachtsman, Chay Blyth’s attempt to break a century-old sailing record lay in ruins after his trimaran capsized in stormy seas off Cape Horn. The 44-year-old veteran of two round-the-world voyages suffered the ignominy of being rescued by a Chilean factory ship. His upturned trimaran, Beefeater Two, was left to the mercy of the ocean — as was its predecessor in the run-up to Blyth’s illfated trip. Blyth and his crewman,
Eric Blunn, were trying to break the sailing record for New York to San Francisco via the Cane. Beefeater Two successfully rounded the Horn, .but disaster struck 64 km later. The trimaran was spotted by a Chilean air force plane and the Chilean ship homed in on the two yachtsmen, who were sitting on the upturned hull. The rescue took place 80 kms south of Cape Hom, which meant the vessel had been drifting backwards after capsizing.
