L.P.G. cleared in car crash
PA Wellington No obvious fault had been found in the L.P.G. fuel system of the car that crashed and exploded near Te Awamutu 10 days ago, said the police yesterday. Two persons died as a result of the high-speed accident
The police ordered ’a vehicle inspector to examine the L.P.G.-fuelled Ford Cortina, said Sergeant Bob Howell, of Te Awamutu police. A preliminary report showed that the L.P.G. sys-tem-was all right, he said. •The fuel line had burst in the accident, releasing fuel, but this could have hap-
pened with a petrol-fuelled vehicle.
The tank’s safety valve withstood the accident, and the inspector bad found L.P.G. in the tank, he said. But the police had asked the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research to conduct further tests of the metal strength of the L.P.G. system so that the police could be satisfied there was nothing wrong with the components, he said. Sergeant .Howell said the accident was unusual because it involved a vehicle fuelled solely by L.P.G., which exploded into flames, and so the investigation was being taken further than normal.
