Shipping news Record year for port
Tonnage figures for the Port of Lyttelton’s record year, ended September 30, have been I released by the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan. The figures confirm earlier predictions of a substantial increase during the 1983-84 year, 34.2 per cent on the previous year. More than 2,824,000 tonnes of cargo was handled at Lyttelton during the period, representing an increase of 719,940 tonnes on the previous year’s tonnage. Mr Morgan said coastal cargoes increased by more than 490,000 tonnes and overseas cargoes by about 228,600 tonnes. “The major increases in the coastal cargo were the result of the Lyttelton-Wellington roll-on, roll-off service and the I : increases in the overseas trade were mainly a result, of increased containers and dry bulk exports,” he said. * The Pacifica Shipping Company’s vessel Spirit of Free Enterprise and overseas rollon, roll-off trades, mainly cars and the Baltic Shipping quarter ramp vessels were the “key contributors" to the increased port tonnages. Significant increases were also achieved in bulk exports such as coal, and barley and tonnages through the Lyttelton container terminal, he said. Regionally, the Japanese and Australian trades had shown major growth. The single major decrease of 43,122 tonnes from the Pacific Islands region was due to lower manure imports, Mr Morgan said. Although the port had achieved a record tonnage Mr Morgan said it was important to note that the two major contributors, coal and coastal traffic, were under severe threat from other means of transport. “The board has budgeted for a small decrease in the current year, however it is vitally important that every step is taken to protect the viability of both our coastal and overseas export bulk traffic,” he’ said. “Our charges in both these areas will need to be kept to an absolute minimum if we are to hold the business in the longer term.” ARRIVALS Avelona Star (5.30 a.m.), 7618, Auckland (Blueport).
