Peninsula makes good start
Last season’s winner, Banks Peninsula, has made a good start to this season’s Senior Shield representative cricket series. Peninsula gained 10 points, including two bonus points, from a first innings win against Ellesmere, one point. Last ■equal in the five round competition last season, Hurunui trounced Ashley in another first innings win. Malvern had a bye. The points first round are:— Peninsula 10, Hurunui 10, Ashley 1, Ellesmere 1, Malvern 0. Fourteen Christchurch Suburban and North Canterbury Players have been named to take part in Canterbury under 19 trials at Ham this Sunday at 10.30 a.m. The players are: D. Lund, G. Henderson, B. Plaskett, C. Rolfe, B. Fleming, T. Johnston, G. Lewis, G. Keenan, D. Aitken, J. Abbott, A. McDonald, G. Merrin, J. Starling, S. Alexander.
Last season’s champion,
Malvern has taken a first round lead in the Norman Allen Trophy under 23 representative cricket series. Malvern beat last season’s runner-up, Ashley at Sheffield on the first innings and won the bonus points in the first of the five round series. Banks Peninsula had a first innings win against Hurunui, which gained the bonus points, at Scargill. Ellesmere had the bye. Championship points:— Malvern 10, Banks Peninsula 8, Hurunui 3, Ashley 1, Ellesmere 0. First round match scores were:— Hurunui 177 (Tony Clemett 55, Peter Grigg 42 n. 0., D. Santy 4/37); Banks Peninsula 179/6 (Bill Basefield 60 n. 0., Don Chamberlain 43, Dean Lund 3/63.) Malvern 177 (George Ridgen 27, Graeme Henderson 26, Gary Elvy 27; Philip Miles 4/34, 3/23); Ashley 142 (Richard Stokes 35; Warren Cullen 4/23, Donald Kars 3/ 27.)
