Suspicious fire in church hall

Fire-safety officers are investigating a fire in the Madras Street hall of St John’s Anglican Church, Latimer Square, late last evening. A Fire Service mobilising officer, Mr R. Knott, said early this morning that there was a “great possibility” that arson was the cause of the fire. Five fire engines, includ-

ing snorkel and turntable ladder appliances, were called to the hall shortly before midnight. The fire was under control by about 1 a.m. The firemen managed to stop it spreading to the adjacent premises of Blackwell Motors, Ltd. It is thought there was little structural damage to the ball. The hall, which is used regularly as a “drop-in centre,” was believed to be empty at the time.
