Leg injury delays walker
The Christchurch Medic Alert campaigner, Mr Graehme Bruce, plans to continue his 2000 km walk in spite of a leg injury that forced him to return home yesterday for treatment. Mr Bruce, an epileptic, is walking from Christchurch to Kaitaia via Invercargill to promote Medic Alert, the identification system for people at risk because of hidden medical problems. On Monday, Mr Bruce was walking between Wanaka and Luggate when he stepped on a broken road marker hidden in long grass. "The marker ricocheted up and hit me on the shin. I nearly passed out with the pain. “My leg started to swell up that night and on Tuesday I spent all afternoon putting ice on it,” he said. Yesterday, Mr Bruce decided to return to Christchurch for expert treatment. He plans to continue his walk from the West Coast after a few days rest; “I have come through so much that I am not going to let a little thing like that stop me. “The trip has been fantastic so far, with only one rainy day. Everybody I have met and those I have stayed with have been really good,” said Mr Bruce.
