Church union

Sir,—A recent British radio survey revealed that a third to a half of the bishops of the Church of England in England did not believe in such things as the divinity of Christ or his resurrection from the dead, let alone such details as the virgin birth or the miracles. How comic it is then, to hear the vicar of St Peter’s Church, Wellington (“The Press,” October 31) solemnly announce that the idea of the Papacy would have to be modified before Roman Catholics and Anglicans could unite. This must be a classic example of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. There will have to be agreement about far more fundamental things than Church administration before there can be any union. Does one have to believe anything to be an Anglican these days? — Yours, etc., (Miss) L. T. TAYLOR. November 2, 1984.
