Lords decline to comment

Privy Council Law Lords who heard Mr Peter Mahon’s Mount Erebus crash case appeal in July last year,, have declined to comment on allegations made by Mr Mahon in New Zealand last week. Mr Mahon, in an address to the National Press Club after the launching of his book, “Verdict of Erebus,” criticised the Privy Council’s judgment on the Erebus Royal Commission report. He said that it had been “a clumsy patchwork judgment designed to placate Air New Zealand management and to smooth the ruffled plumage of the Government.”

The Law Lords were sent copies of reports containing Mr Mahon’s comments which appeared in New Zealand newspapers. Lord Diplock, aged 75, said that he had “no intention of commenting upon this. It would be quite improper for me to uo so.” Lord Seaman referred to the reports as “interesting” but said,. “I am sure you will understand me when I tell you that I do not think it would be appropriate for me to make any comment on the matter at all.” Lord Bridge of Harwich, Lord Keith, and Lord Templeman also declined to comment.
