Punakaiki plan discussed
Wellington reporter The reaction of the Forest Service to proposals for a national park around Punakaiki and the Paparoa Ranges in northern Westland is contained in briefing papers to the new Minister of Forests, Mr Wetere. The service to
present its views on the future management of the area very soon. The Forest Service said it would indicate the likely consequences for the Buller timber industry should the national park proposal be endorsed by the Government Any productive use of the
timber that might be proposed did not mean the destruction of the forest, the papers said. The objective was to sustain the resource, which would equate with Labour Party policy to “introduce a policy of sustained-yield management in the Buller withingts first term.”
