Mark Harris (top) and Vince Fox, of the Waimairi Surf Life-saving Club, test the club’s new rescue boat in the Waimairi Beach surf yesterday. The $BOOO inflatable craft was won in a national surf life-saving competition and was given by Europa Oil, Ltd.
It is powered by an outboard motor and is regarded as the fastest form of surf rescue. There are now six such craft on Canterbury beaches. To use them, lifeguards must have thorough training and pass national surf lifesaving association examinations.
