A.A.C. holds election
Mr W. J. Harris has become the first councillor from outside the Christchurch metropolitan area to be elected vice-president of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). - He succeeds Mr R. E. Wilton, of Christchurch, who was elected president of the association. Three Christchurch residents were elected to the council, which governs the A. A. (Canterbury), at the recent annual meeting. They were Mr G. K. Austin, an architect, Mr M. R. Compton, a chartered accountant, and Mr J. L. Mar-
getts, the managing director of a lampshade manufacturing company. The retiring president of the association, Mr R. A. Ayton, filled a fourth vacancy. The association now has four emeritus life members, three of whom were elected at the annual meeting. Mr E. R. Casbolt, who retired as a councillor at the meeting, has been active in association affairs since 1946. He was president from 1957. to 1961 and vice-presi-dent of the national association from 1966 to 1968. Mr Casbolt still works at the motor-cycle dealership he
founded in Gloucester Street. Mr Dick Maling retired last year after 26 years on the council. He was vicepresident from 1966 to 1968 and president from 1968 to 1970. Formerly manager of Maling and Company, he is now retired. Mr Tom Milliken, a Christchurch surgeon, also retired last year, having served on the council for 21 years.
The fourth life member is Mr Ernie Palliser, who was general manager of the association for the 31 years preceding his retirement three years ago.
