Burnside has softball win
The joint leaders in the Dalgety Crown Travel men’s senior softball competition had mixed fortunes on Wednesday evening. Chancery Restaurant Bumside won its match, 2-0, against Clarity Press Papanui, at the Papanui Domain, but AGC United was unable to tilt with Amalgamated Batteries Suburbs because of the muddy state of the Western Park diamond.
Although the ground was a little puggy and the wind was cold at the domain, some fine softball was produced.
Papanui was unlucky to have seven batters stranded on base during the game.. Two of them advanced on safe hits in a bold last innings attempt to level the
scores, but the next three players in the box were struck out by Jimmy Hall, who had nine of these dismissals for the match.
Colin Sutherland, who, like Hall, faced 28 batters, gained six strike-outs for Papanui. Burnside had six hits and no errors; Papanui five hits and one error.
That particular fumble came in the third innings, and was the prelude to Burnside’s two runs. Murray Lanini went to first base on it, advanced on a bunt by Graeme Anderson, and made third when Hall smote a fly hit to the outfield. A line drive by Dave Workman brought Lanini home, and then Anderson crossed the home plate on a steal, with John 1 Daly in the box.
