Beauty contests
Sir,—Vernon Wilkinson says that individual women have the right of choice whether to be a sex object or not. This is not correct. Women are made into sex objects by men. Those of us who realise the dangers and injustice of sex objectification are still affected by it, by comments, appraisals, leers and wolf whistles. The very same rating and judging, legitimised by the beauty contest, is carried on down into social occasions and to street level where it is no longer glamorous. The voyeurs on the streets of our everyday existence are sordid and threatening. As for Mr Wilkinson’s comment on anorexia, perhaps he should stick to subjects he knows something about—Yours, etc.,
