Cycling on the footpath

Sir,—ln reply to J. Owens (October 29) I am sorry for a delayed reply, but I have been trying to stay clear of the car doors. I proceeded down the main streets in peak-hour 3 p.m. traffic, with all the school children, staying well clear of the car doors, but allowing plenty of room for vehicles. It was like a symphonic orchestra with horns tooting and abusive drivers telling me to get out of their way as they had first right on the road. In desperation, I followed the same lane as the school children, only to have to stop and pick up one of them, who had been knocked down, 1

luckily with only a grazed knee, while the driver drove off saying his pub and tea came first. All the abuse came from the men drivers, proving they have the least patience on the roads—Yours, etc., MRS S. ADAMS. Kaiapoi, October 31, 1984.
