Official report, prices

Prices for extra fine Merino wools rose 2.5 to 5 per cent at the Christchurch wool sale yesterday. Most other wool types were up to 2.5 per cent dearer than recent sales or in sellers’ favour. According to the official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Council of Wool Exporters, woolly and shorn Merino hogget wool comprised most of the offering of 27,017 bales. The wool came from growers in North Canterbury, Mid-Canterbury and Marlborough. T.. . ’ The Merino wool was attactive, although a little coarser than last year because of the good growing season. Most quality wool ranged from 19 to 21 microns, and staple length, colour, and yield were described as good. Only a few lots of hogget wool were of average to poor quality, most being described as good or good to super. Competition was widespread and the principal buyers represented the Far East, Western Europe and New Zealand mills. Some support was given by Eastern European buyers. Compared with the TimaruDunedin sale on October 26, extra fine Merino was 2.5 to 5 per cent dearer, fine and medium Merino was generally unchanged, and extra fine and fine Halfbred was up to 2.5 per cent dearer. Medium, strong and extra strong Halfbred was in sellers’ favour, and Halfbred skirtings, second pieces and locks were 2.5 to 5 per cent dearer. Fine, medium and strong crossbred was inclined to be in sellers’ favour compared with the Napier sale on Thursday, ] and crossbred second-shear, second pieces and locks were generally unchanged. The Wool Board gave mini- ] mal support to the market. Prompt date is November 20. The following is the official range of clean prices:—
