Army head to make last visit

Major-General R.G. Williams, Chief of the General Staff, will make a farewell visit to Canterbury units of the New Zealand Army over the next few days.

General Williams, who was appointed to his position in November, 1981, will retire next month and will be succeeded by Brigadier J. Mace.

General Williams will be in Canterbury from tomorrow until Tuesday, when he will leave for Wellington.

While in Christchurch he will attend a dinner with the 2nd Battalion (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast), Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, will inspect Third Task Force headquarters, Addington Barracks, and Burnhambased units including the 2nd / Ist Battalion, R.N.Z.I.R.

On Monday, a parade will be held in his honour at Burnham Military Camp,

during which he will present the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to seven non-commissioned officers. General Williams will complete his visit with a formal dinner at the Burnham Camp officers’ mess on Monday evening.
