Short-lived scarecrow

NZPA staff correspondent New York Jim Hilton, the recreation director of St Albans, Vermont, has just supervised the construction, of the world’s largest scarecrow — 17 metres high, and stuffed with six bales of hay and hundreds of bags of leaves. Mr Hilton’s earlier projects included the world’s largest snowman, ice-cream sundae, and pancake. “It has been fun,’’ he said, as he looked at the finished scarecrow. Then they burnt it.
